When it comes to betting on NBA games, most average bettors prefer to stick to the teams they know. It’s no secret that teams like the Lakers, Celtics, Cavs ans Spurs almost always are giving away 1 to 2 points more than they deserve to be for no other reason than they garner the most action. Weber State has had a great season so far. At 20-8 overall (14-1 Big Sky) and riding an 11 game winning streak, a date in the dance is looking more and more likely. Despite their success though, their last loss sticks out. It came at home against Montana State, a team that stands just 13-15 overall (6-9 Big Sky) and is just 5-11 on the road. At 82 games long, it should come as no surprise that even the best teams in the NBA hit a rough patch every once in a while. Indeed, each one of the top five teams in the league (Los Angeles, Boston, Orlando, Cleveland and San Antonio) have lost 2 or more games in a row at least once this season. The Lakers are the latest victim coming off back to back road losses in Phoenix and Denver.
Which brings me to one of my all-time favorite, and best performing NBA betting systems. Top 10 teams (according to ESPN’s Power Rankings) are 23-4 (85%) this season SU and 19-8 (70%) ATS following two consecutive losses.
UPDATE: This system moved to 24-4 SU and 20-8 ATS after the San Antonio Spurs easily covered last night against the Clippers.
And this performance isn’t an abberation. Over the past 7 seasons, this system has hit an average of 83% SU and 68% ATS.
Getting back to the Lakers, this is only the third time that they’ve lost 2 straight this season. The first time, they won straight up at Memphis but failed to cover the 12 point spread and the second, they dismantled Cleveland 105-88 at the Staples Center.
Looking at tonight’s game, they’re once again facing Memphis, this time giving away 15.5 points, but this time it’s on their home floor. The Grizzlies come into this game having lost 7 in a row SU but have covered 3 of the 4 games during that stretch in which they were double digit dogs.
How will the Lakers respond? Well, I think it’s pretty safe to say that a straight up win is almost certain. Of course, the moneyline, even if the books actually post one on this game, will be way to high to even think about betting it. So that leaves us staring at a fairly significant 15.5 point spread.
For what it’s worth, the Lakers are just 5-10 ATS this season when favored by 12 or more points while Memphis is 4-1 ATS when getting 12 or more. Of course, being back at home against one of the worst teams in the league following two straight losses could just render those records irrelevant.
